Hiring Hourly Workers: Tips to Get It Done Effectively

Hourly workers are a great way to get things done, especially when there is a lot of work that needs to be completed quickly. Hiring hourly workers can be tricky if you’re not sure what you’re doing, but it doesn’t have to be! In this blog post, we’ll discuss how you can hire hourly workers for your business in the most efficient and cost-effective ways possible. We’ll also offer some tips on how to make sure they stay happy, productive, and loyal– which will lead directly to increased profits for your company!

Post your job post in as many places as possible.

It’s possible to hire hourly workers on social media and online job boards, but we suggest trying local sources first. We’ve found that using Craigslist or a similar platform is usually the most efficient way to find employees with less time spent filtering through unqualified applicants than other websites offer. Be sure you’re posting in an appropriate location.

Also, look at posting the job on industry job boards. Industry and association job boards are a great way to find hourly workers in your specific industry. For example, if you work in manufacturing, visit the American Manufacturing Association website and look for an hourly worker job board where employers can post jobs directly on their site! This is also another place where hiring managers will go looking when they need someone quickly, so be aware of your competition when you post here.

Write a strong job description that is inviting, while also giving relevant details to the position you’re trying to hire for.

Writing a clear and concise job description is the first step in hiring hourly workers. Your job posting should be inviting and give enough information about your company to show applicants what it’s like working there, but also needs to convey all of the necessary details about the position itself- such as hours, pay rate, etc.

Make sure you’ve covered all the specifics, and research your state laws about discrimination in hiring. Be sure not to ask about the following.

  • Instead, ask if they are able to perform the functions of the job.
  • Instead, ask if they can read, write and speak English, but only if that is necessary for the job they are performing. If they speak other languages, don’t ask them where they learned that or where they were born.
  • Do not ask where they were born, or anything about immigration. Instead, ask if they are legally allowed to work for any US employer.
  • In general, you cannot ask them their gender, gender identity, etc.
  • Family Topics. Do not ask about their kids, spouse, or family makeup. If they volunteer that information, do not add it to your notes, as that cannot be used as part of your hiring decision.
  • Criminal background. Do not ask if they have ever been arrested. You can ask them if they are willing to submit to a background check.

Check an applicant’s references.

References are an important part of hiring hourly workers because they can give you, insight into how the person has performed in past jobs, which will help you determine if this is a right fit for your company. References may include previous employers or coworkers- just be sure to only contact people who have agreed to act as references ahead of time! If they only provide friends for references, you can ask if they have past managers or coworkers who would be willing to provide a reference.

This can seem like a simple step but is often overlooked when applicants seem strong. Checking references can help to solidify their background, and let you know more about what type of worker that applicant might be.

Be open to texting applicants to get a faster response.

Hiring hourly workers is a time-consuming process, and if you’re looking to hire as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time, text message applicants. This can be especially helpful when they are not local or available for an interview right away. It may seem like it takes longer at first- but think about how much more quickly you’ll get a response from the applicant to see if they are qualified or not. Additionally, with the prevalence of spam calls many people do not answer calls from unknown numbers anymore. Be sure to include in your application that you might be reaching out to applicants via text message.
